Rock Sandpiper Collection

The Rock Sandpiper (Calidris ptilocnemis) is a species of sandpiper belonging to the family Charadriiformes, and is found in coastal areas and tundra habitats throughout Alaska, Canada, and northern Eurasia, large bill, short legs, and long wings that are pointed at the tips. Its plumage is mainly gray-brown with white spots on its back and wings. During breeding season it develops black barring on its chest and head. It feeds on small invertebrates such as insects, crustaceans, mollusks, worms, larvae, and other small animals found in mudflats or shallow waters near shorelines. The Rock Sandpiper nests in colonies near water sources during the summer months before migrating south for winter months where they can be seen along coasts of North America from California to Texas.
