Sanderling Collection

Sanderlings (Charadriiformes) are small shorebirds that belong to the sandpiper family. They have a slender body, long legs and a short bill. These birds are found in coastal areas around the world, usually near beaches and mudflats. They feed on small invertebrates such as insects, worms, crustaceans and mollusks which they find by probing in the sand or mud with their bills. During breeding season they migrate to Arctic tundra where they nest in shallow depressions on the ground lined with grasses and feathers, and are highly social birds often seen foraging or flying in large flocks along shorelines during migration periods. Their distinctive call is a loud “tseep” sound which can be heard from far away distances. These birds are an important part of our coastal ecosystems as their presence helps maintain healthy beach habitats for other species to thrive in.
