Solitary Sandpiper Collection

The Solitary Sandpiper (Tringa solitaria) is a species of shorebird from the family Charadriiformes, and is found in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The sandpiper has a long neck and legs with a short bill. Its plumage varies from grey to brown with white spots on its wings and back. It prefers to live in shallow wetlands such as marshes, ponds, lakeshores or slow-moving streams. During breeding season it will migrate northward but during winter it will move southward to warmer climates. Its diet consists of aquatic insects, crustaceans and small fish which it finds by probing the mud with its bill or by wading through shallow water. The Solitary Sandpiper is an important part of wetland ecosystems as it helps keep insect populations under control while providing food for other animals such as foxes and hawks.
