Willet Collection

Willet (Tringa semipalmata) is a medium-sized shorebird belonging to the family Charadriiformes, and is found along the coasts of North and South America, as well as in parts of Europe and Asia. Willets have a greyish-brown back, white underparts, and black legs, and are most easily identified by their long legs and large size compared to other sandpipers. Willets feed on small invertebrates such as worms, crustaceans, mollusks, insects, and occasionally fish eggs or small fish and can be seen foraging in shallow waters or along beaches during low tide periods. During breeding season they form monogamous pairs which nest on the ground near water bodies such as marshes or estuaries, and are an important part of coastal ecosystems due to their role in controlling populations of invertebrates that could otherwise become pests if left unchecked.
