Wilsons Phalarope Collection

Wilson's Phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor) is a small sandpiper belonging to the Charadriiformes family of birds, and is found in North America and Eurasia, breeding in the northern parts of both continents. The bird has a distinctive black and white plumage, with a reddish-brown back and wings. Its bill is long and thin, with a yellow tip. Wilson's Phalarope feeds mainly on aquatic insects, crustaceans, mollusks, small fish and other invertebrates which it obtains by wading or swimming in shallow water. During the breeding season it builds its nest on dry ground near water bodies such as ponds or marshes. It lays three to four eggs which are incubated for about three weeks before hatching. After hatching the chicks are able to leave the nest within two days but remain dependent on their parents for food for up to five weeks before becoming independent.
