Wilsons Snipe Collection

Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata) is a species of sandpiper in the family Scolopacidae, and is a medium-sized shorebird with a long, slightly curved bill and mottled brown plumage. The bird breeds in North America, migrating south for the winter months. Its habitat includes wet meadows, marshes, bogs and other wet areas. Wilson's Snipe feeds by probing its long bill into mud or shallow water to find worms, insects and crustaceans. During courtship displays, males perform aerial dives and display their white outer tail feathers as they circle above their mate on the ground below. The female builds an open nest on the ground near water and lays four eggs which are incubated by both parents for about three weeks before hatching. Both parents care for the young until they fledge at about three weeks of age. Wilson's Snipe is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to its wide range and stable population trend over recent years.
