European Turtle Dove Collection

The European Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur) is a species of dove in the Columbiformes family, and is native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. The adult bird has a distinctive black and white pattern on its wings and tail feathers, with a grey-brown back and head. Its call is a soft "coo-coo" sound that can be heard from far away. This species feeds mainly on seeds, but will also eat insects when available. During the breeding season it builds an open cup nest in trees or shrubs near water sources such as streams or ponds. The female lays two eggs which are incubated for 14 days before hatching into chicks that fledge after another 14 days or so. This species is declining due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as urbanization and agricultural intensification, making it vulnerable to extinction in some areas of its range.
