Common Kingfisher Collection

The Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a small, brightly colored bird belonging to the Coraciiformes family of birds, and is found throughout much of Europe, Asia, and Africa, bright blue back and wings with an orange-brown chest and belly. It also has a large head with a black bill, white throat, and red legs. Its diet consists mainly of fish which it catches by diving into the water from a low perch or hovering over the surface, and are solitary birds that nest in burrows dug into riverbanks or stream banks near water sources where they can find plenty of food, and are known for their loud call which sounds like “kittiwake” or “tchick” when they are alarmed or excited. The Common Kingfisher is an important species in its habitats as it helps control insect populations and keeps aquatic ecosystems healthy by controlling fish populations.
