Greater Elephant Bird Collection

The Greater Elephant Bird was a large, flightless bird that lived in Madagascar until its extinction in the 17th century. It was the largest bird ever to have lived, standing up to 3 meters tall and weighing up to 500 kilograms. Its eggs were also the largest of any known bird species, measuring up to 34 cm long and weighing over 2 kg each. It had a long neck and legs, a large head with a hooked beak, and greyish-brown feathers. It was an omnivore that fed on fruits, seeds, small animals such as lizards and insects, as well as carrion. Its extinction is believed to have been caused by human hunting for its meat and eggs as well as habitat destruction due to deforestation.
