Australasian Grebe Collection

The Australasian Grebe is a small aquatic bird found in Australia, New Zealand, and other nearby islands and has a long neck and a short bill, with a black cap on its head. Its back is dark brown to black in color, while its underparts are white or light gray. The Australasian Grebe has webbed feet that help it swim and dive for food. It feeds mainly on fish, crustaceans, insects, and other aquatic invertebrates. During the breeding season it builds floating nests of vegetation near the shoreline or in shallow water areas. The female lays two to four eggs which both parents take turns incubating until they hatch after about three weeks. The chicks are able to swim soon after hatching and can fly within two months of hatching. This species is not considered threatened but numbers have declined due to habitat destruction from human activities such as pollution and draining wetlands for development projects.
