Buff Banded Rail Collection

The Buff Banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis) is a species of rail found in Australia, New Guinea, and some nearby islands, and is a medium-sized bird with a grey-brown back and wings, white underparts, and a black head with white stripes. Its legs are yellowish-green. This species prefers to inhabit wetlands such as swamps, marshes, lagoons, estuaries and mangroves. It feeds on invertebrates such as worms and insects as well as seeds from aquatic plants. The Buff Banded Rail is usually seen alone or in pairs but can form large flocks when there is an abundance of food available. Breeding occurs during the wet season when males display their feathers to attract females for mating purposes. The female lays her eggs in nests built on the ground near water sources where they are incubated by both parents until hatching occurs after about three weeks. This species has been listed as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its wide distribution range and stable population numbers throughout its range despite some localized threats from human activities such as habitat destruction or degradation caused by urbanization or agricultural expansion.
