Eurasian Coot Collection

The Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra) is a species of rail bird that is found in Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa, and is a medium-sized waterbird with a black head and neck, white bill and red eyes. The body is mainly grey-black with white undertail coverts. Its legs are short and yellowish-green in color. It feeds mainly on aquatic plants, but will also eat insects, mollusks, crustaceans and small fish. During the breeding season it builds its nest out of reeds or rushes on the edge of ponds or lakes. The female lays 4 to 8 eggs which are incubated by both parents for about 21 days before hatching. This species has an estimated global population of around 1 million individuals and its conservation status is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List due to its widespread range across Europe, Asia and parts of Africa.
