Spotted Crake Collection

The Spotted Crake (Rallidae Gruiformes) is a small bird found in wetlands throughout Europe, Asia and Africa and has a distinctive black and white spotted plumage, with a grey head and neck. The Spotted Crake prefers to live in shallow water with plenty of vegetation, such as reeds or rushes. It feeds mainly on aquatic invertebrates, but will also eat seeds and other plant material. During the breeding season it builds its nest among the vegetation near the water's edge. The female lays up to eight eggs which are incubated by both parents for around three weeks before hatching. The chicks are able to fly within two weeks of hatching and become independent soon after that. The Spotted Crake is an important part of wetland ecosystems as it helps control insect populations while providing food for predators such as foxes or birds of prey.
