Pacific Loon Collection

Pacific Loons are a species of aquatic birds found in the northern Pacific Ocean. They have black and white plumage, a long neck, and a pointed bill, and are strong swimmers and divers, capable of reaching depths of up to 60 meters. Pacific Loons feed on fish, crustaceans, mollusks, amphibians, insects and other small aquatic animals. During breeding season they form monogamous pairs that build floating nests near shorelines or on islands. The female lays two eggs which are incubated for about 28 days before hatching. After hatching the chicks remain with their parents for up to three months before becoming independent. Pacific Loons migrate south in winter to warmer waters where they can find food more easily than during colder months in their northern range. Conservation efforts have been successful in recent years as populations have increased due to protection from hunting and habitat loss prevention programs implemented by governments around the world.
