New Zealand Robin Collection

The New Zealand Robin (Petroica australis) is a passerine bird native to New Zealand. It belongs to the family Petroicidae, which includes Australian Robins. This species is found in both lowland and montane forests, as well as scrublands and tussock grasslands, and are typically small birds, measuring between 11-13 cm in length with a wingspan of 18-20 cm. They have brown upperparts and white underparts with a distinctive black head and chest patch. The male has an orange breast while the female has a greyish-brown one. These birds feed mainly on insects but also eat fruits and berries when available, and are territorial during breeding season but otherwise live in flocks throughout the year. The New Zealand Robin is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its large range and stable population numbers, however it may be vulnerable to habitat destruction or changes in climate due to its limited range within New Zealand only.
