Red Capped Robin Collection

The Red-capped Robin (Petroica goodenovii) is a passerine bird native to Australia, and is a medium-sized robin, with males having bright red heads and females having brown heads with reddish tinges. The rest of the body is grey-brown in colour, with white underparts and white wing bars. This species can be found in woodlands, forests and heathlands across much of south-eastern Australia. It feeds on insects, spiders and other invertebrates that it finds on the ground or in low vegetation. During breeding season they form monogamous pairs which build a cup nest out of grasses and spider webs lined with feathers or fur near the ground or in low shrubs. The female usually lays two to four eggs which are incubated by both parents for around two weeks before hatching, and are an important part of Australian ecosystems as they help control insect populations while providing food for larger predators such as snakes, cats and birds of prey.
