Ribbon Tailed Astrapia Collection

The Ribbon-tailed Astrapia (Astrapia mayeri) is a species of passerine bird in the family Paradisaeidae, also known as Birds of Paradise, and is found in New Guinea and nearby islands. This species has a long tail with two ribbon-like feathers at the end, which can reach up to 1m in length. The male has an iridescent blue-green head and neck, black wings and back, white underparts and yellow feet. The female is duller than the male with brownish plumage overall. They feed mainly on fruits but will also take insects and small vertebrates such as lizards or frogs, and are usually seen alone or in pairs but can form larger groups when food resources are plentiful. Breeding occurs between April to August during which time males display their impressive tails to attract females for mating purposes.
