Victorias Riflebird Collection

The Victoria's Riflebird is a species of passerine bird found in Australia and New Guinea, and is part of the family Paradisaeidae, which includes birds-of-paradise. This species has a glossy black plumage with an iridescent blue sheen, and males have two long tail feathers that they use to attract mates. The female is duller in coloration but still has the same iridescent sheen. Both sexes have red eyes and yellow beaks, while the male also has a red wattle on his throat. These birds inhabit tropical rainforests and feed mainly on insects, fruit, nectar, and small vertebrates such as lizards or frogs, and are usually seen alone or in pairs during breeding season but can form large flocks outside of this period. Victoria's Riflebirds are considered to be near threatened due to habitat loss from deforestation but their population appears to be stable overall.
