European Stonechat Collection

The European Stonechat (Saxicola rubicola) is a small passerine bird belonging to the chats and flycatchers family, and is found across much of Europe, as well as in parts of North Africa and western Asia. The male has a black head, white collar, orange-brown back, and reddish-brown breast. The female is similar but duller in coloration. Both sexes have a white rump and tail with dark central feathers. These birds feed mainly on insects such as beetles, flies, grasshoppers, caterpillars and spiders which they catch by hovering or perching on low vegetation or rocks. They also eat some berries when available in winter months, and are usually seen alone or in pairs during the breeding season but may form larger flocks outside this period when food is more plentiful.
