Iiwi Collection

Iiwi is a species of bird native to Hawaii, and is a member of the family Fringillidae, which includes finches and other passerine birds. The Iiwi has bright red feathers on its head, neck, and chest, with black wings and tail. Its beak is curved and pointed for feeding on nectar from flowers. The Iiwi lives in high-elevation forests in the Hawaiian islands, where it feeds on nectar from lobelia flowers as well as insects. It builds nests in tree cavities or other sheltered areas such as cliffs or crevices. The Iiwi population has declined due to habitat destruction and introduced diseases such as avian malaria; however conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from further decline.
