Red Wattlebird Collection

The Red Wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata) is a species of honeyeater native to Australia, and is a medium-sized passerine bird, approximately 28 cm in length, with a distinctive red wattle on either side of its neck. The plumage is mostly grey-brown, but the head and throat are black with white streaks. Its diet consists mainly of nectar and insects, which it obtains by probing flowers or catching them in flight. It also eats fruits and berries from shrubs and trees. The Red Wattlebird is found in open woodlands, parks and gardens throughout much of Australia, including Tasmania. It builds an open cup nest out of twigs, bark strips and grasses lined with feathers or soft plant material. Breeding season occurs between August to December when pairs form monogamous relationships for the duration of the breeding season before dispersing again afterwards.
