Brown Headed Cowbird Collection

The Brown-headed Cowbird is a species of New World blackbird, belonging to the family of passerines, and is native to North America and can be found in open grasslands and woodlands. The male has a glossy black head, neck, back and wings with white spots on its wings. Its underparts are grayish-brown with a pale throat. The female is duller in coloration than the male, with brown streaking on her back and wings. They feed primarily on insects but will also eat grains and seeds when available. Breeding season begins in late spring or early summer when they construct cup-shaped nests in trees or shrubs near their feeding grounds. Brown-headed Cowbirds are considered pests by some farmers as they lay their eggs in other birds' nests instead of building their own nests to raise their young, which can lead to competition for food resources between cowbird chicks and those of the host species.
