Ovenbird Collection

Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla) is a species of New World warbler belonging to the family Parulidae, and is found throughout much of North America, with its range extending from Alaska and Canada south to Mexico and Guatemala, and are small birds, measuring around 5-6 inches in length, with brownish upperparts and white underparts. They have a distinctive orange crown patch on their heads, as well as white stripes above their eyes. Ovenbirds feed mainly on insects which they glean from foliage or catch in mid-air; they also eat some fruit and seeds. During breeding season they construct an oven-shaped nest out of leaves, mosses and grasses which is placed low to the ground near thickets or shrubs for protection from predators. The male sings a loud song during courtship that sounds like "teacher teacher teacher", and are common throughout much of their range but have experienced population declines due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as logging and development.
