Blackcap Collection

Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) is a species of Old World Warbler, belonging to the Passerines family of birds, and is a small bird, measuring between 13 and 15 cm in length, with males having a black cap on their heads and females having brownish-grey caps. The wingspan of the Blackcap is usually between 19 and 22 cm, and are mainly found in Europe, although some migrate to North Africa during winter months. Blackcaps feed mainly on insects and other invertebrates, but will also eat fruits and berries when available. They build their nests in shrubs or low trees near water sources such as streams or ponds. The breeding season for this species runs from April through August, with two broods per year being common in most areas, and are generally considered beneficial to humans due to their insectivorous diet; however they can be considered pests if they become too numerous around fruit trees or gardens due to their fondness for ripe fruits.
