Brazilian Tanager Collection

The Brazilian Tanager (Ramphocelus bresilius) is a species of passerine bird in the family Thraupidae, and is native to Brazil and can be found in tropical and subtropical forests, woodlands, and shrublands and has a distinctive black head, yellow body, and red wings with white tips. The male has a bright red throat patch while the female lacks this feature. The Brazilian Tanager feeds mainly on fruits but will also take insects as well as other small invertebrates. Its diet includes figs, berries, nuts, seeds, flowers and nectar from flowering plants. It builds its nest in trees or bushes using twigs and grasses lined with feathers or fur for insulation against the elements. This species is not considered threatened but its population numbers are decreasing due to deforestation of its habitat for agricultural purposes or urban development.
