Dalmatian Pelican Collection

The Dalmatian Pelican is the largest of all pelicans and one of the world's heaviest flying birds, and is native to southeastern Europe, Asia Minor, and parts of Africa. Its wingspan can reach up to 11 feet and its body length can reach up to 5 feet and has a white plumage with black spots on its wings and back, hence its name “Dalmatian”. The bird feeds mainly on fish but also eats frogs, crustaceans, insects, mollusks, small mammals and other aquatic animals. During breeding season it builds large nests in colonies near lakes or rivers where it lays two to three eggs at a time. The chicks are fed by both parents until they fledge at around two months old. Conservation efforts have been successful in increasing the population of this species which was once threatened due to hunting for feathers or food as well as habitat destruction from human activities such as farming or fishing.
