African Collection

African penguins are a species of penguin found on the coasts of South Africa and Namibia. They have black and white feathers, with a distinctive pink band across their chest. African penguins are social animals, living in large colonies near the shoreline. They feed mainly on small fish, squid, and crustaceans which they catch by diving underwater. African penguins can dive up to 200 meters deep in search of food. During breeding season, pairs form monogamous relationships and build nests from stones or mud to lay their eggs in. The chicks hatch after about 40 days and stay with their parents for several months before becoming independent. African penguins are currently classified as vulnerable due to threats such as oil spills, overfishing, habitat destruction and climate change. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this unique species from extinction.
