Royal Penguin Collection

The Royal Penguin (Eudyptes schlegeli) is a species of penguin native to the sub-Antarctic islands of Macquarie, Heard and Kerguelen, and is the largest of all crested penguins, standing up to 76 cm tall and weighing up to 4.5 kg, distinctive black head with white ear patches, a white chin and throat, black upperparts and white underparts. Its bill is bright orange-red with a pale yellow tip. Its breeding habitat includes rocky coasts and sandy beaches on these islands where it builds its nest in large colonies. It feeds mainly on krill, squid and fish which it catches while swimming underwater in search of food. The Royal Penguin is considered vulnerable due to its limited range but populations are currently stable thanks to conservation efforts by local governments in the region.
