Yellow Eyed Penguin Collection

The Yellow-Eyed Penguin, also known as the Hoiho, is a species of penguin native to New Zealand, and is one of the rarest and most endangered penguin species in the world, and are easily identified by their yellow eyes and distinctive yellow band across their heads, and are medium-sized penguins, standing about 70 cm tall and weighing up to 4 kgs. Their diet consists mainly of fish, squid and other marine life found near the shoreline. Breeding occurs during summer months with pairs forming lifelong bonds and nesting in burrows or on open ground near the shoreline. The population has been decreasing due to human activities such as fishing, habitat destruction and climate change leading to a decrease in food availability for these birds. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from further decline by creating protected areas for them to breed safely away from human disturbance.
