European Green Woodpecker Collection

The European Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis) is a species of woodpecker found in Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia, and is the largest woodpecker in Europe and has a distinctive green plumage with red on its crown and nape. Its bill is long and pointed, allowing it to feed on insects, larvae, nuts, seeds, fruit, and sap from trees. It nests in cavities made by other birds or excavated by itself. The male's call consists of loud “klek-klek” sounds while the female has a softer “kee-kee-kee” call. This species is considered to be common throughout its range but there have been some declines due to habitat loss caused by deforestation and agricultural intensification. Conservation efforts have been put into place to protect this species from further decline.
