Red Breasted Sapsucker Collection

The Red-breasted Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber) is a medium-sized woodpecker belonging to the Piciformes family of birds, and is found in coniferous and mixed forests across North America, from Alaska and Canada to the northern United States. The adult male has a bright red head, breast, and throat with black wings, back, and tail. Its bill is yellowish with a black tip. The female has similar markings but lacks the red coloration on its head and breast. These birds feed mainly on tree sap which they obtain by drilling holes into trees with their beaks; they also eat insects such as ants, beetles, caterpillars, wasps and bees, and are cavity nesters that build their nests in dead trees or stumps that have been previously drilled by other sapsuckers or woodpeckers. Red-breasted Sapsuckers are important seed dispersal agents for many species of trees as well as providing food for other animals such as squirrels and bears who feed on the sap they extract from trees.
