Antarctic Petrel Collection

The Antarctic Petrel (Thalassoica antarctica) is a species of seabird in the petrel family, and is native to Antarctica and breeds on the continent's islands, including South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, and the South Orkney Islands, white head and neck with dark gray upperparts and wings. Its underparts are white with some dark gray mottling on its breast. This species feeds mainly on krill, fish, squid, and other small marine animals that it catches while flying over open water or near ice floes. It nests in burrows dug into soil or snow near colonies of other petrels or penguins. The Antarctic Petrel is an important indicator of climate change as its population size fluctuates with changes in sea-ice cover around Antarctica. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from human activities such as fishing operations that can disrupt their feeding grounds and nesting sites.
