Cooks Petrel Collection

Cook's Petrel is a species of seabird that belongs to the family Procellariidae, which includes other petrels and shearwaters, and is native to the Southern Hemisphere and can be found in New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Peru, and South Africa. The bird has a dark brown body with white patches on its wings and tail. Its bill is hooked at the tip and its legs are yellowish-orange in color. Cook's Petrels feed mainly on fish but also eat squid and crustaceans. They nest in burrows or crevices on cliffs or islands near the sea where they lay one egg per breeding season. This species of seabird is considered vulnerable due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as fishing trawlers that disturb their nesting sites as well as pollution from oil spills that contaminate their food sources. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from further decline in numbers.
