Galapagos Petrel Collection

The Galapagos Petrel is a species of seabird found in the Galapagos Islands, and is a medium-sized petrel, with a wingspan of about 40 inches and a body length of about 16 inches. Its plumage is mostly dark gray, with white patches on its head and neck. It feeds mainly on fish, squid, and crustaceans which it catches while flying over the ocean surface. The Galapagos Petrel breeds on offshore islands in the archipelago during the summer months from April to August. Its nests are built in burrows or crevices among rocks or vegetation at higher elevations away from predators such as rats and cats. The population of this species has been decreasing due to predation by introduced mammals as well as human disturbance near nesting sites. Conservation efforts have been made to protect this species by controlling invasive predators and establishing marine protected areas for their breeding grounds.
