Grey Petrel Collection

The Grey Petrel (Procellaria cinerea) is a species of seabird found in the Southern Hemisphere, and is a medium-sized petrel, with a wingspan of up to 1.2 meters and weighing up to 1.6 kilograms. The plumage is mainly grey, with white underparts and dark grey upperparts, while the head has a black cap and white cheeks. They feed on fish, squid, crustaceans and other marine organisms which they catch by plunge-diving from the air into the sea or scavenging from fishing boats or other ships at sea. Breeding takes place on islands off New Zealand, Chile and Argentina during summer months between October and March when they lay one egg in burrows dug into soil or peaty soil amongst tussock grasses or low shrubs, and are listed as Near Threatened by IUCN due to their small population size which is declining due to human activities such as fishing operations near breeding colonies as well as predation by introduced mammals like cats and rats on eggs and chicks in their nesting areas.
