Northern Giant Petrel Collection

The Northern Giant Petrel (Macronectes halli) is a large seabird in the family Procellariidae, and is found in the Southern Ocean, from Antarctica to South America and New Zealand. Its wingspan can reach up to 1.8 meters, making it one of the largest petrels in the world, white head and neck with dark grey back and wings, as well as yellow legs and feet. It feeds mainly on squid, fish, krill, carrion and sometimes even other seabirds. Breeding occurs during summer months when they build nests on rocky cliffs or sandy beaches near colonies of other petrel species. The chicks are fed by both parents until they fledge at around three months old, and are listed as Near Threatened due to their small population size which is declining due to human activities such as fishing and pollution of their habitat.
