African Openbill Collection

The African Openbill (Anastomus lamelligerus) is a species of stork found in sub-Saharan Africa, and is a large bird, measuring up to 90 cm in length and weighing up to 1.5 kg, distinctive bill that is slightly open at the tip, giving it its name. Its plumage is mostly grey with black wings and tail feathers, and its legs are bright red in color. It feeds mainly on aquatic snails, which it catches by plunging its bill into the water and using its long tongue to extract them from their shells. It also eats frogs, fish, insects, small mammals, reptiles and carrion when available. The African Openbill nests in colonies near wetlands or rivers during the breeding season from August to December; they lay 2-4 eggs at a time which hatch after about 30 days of incubation by both parents. This species of stork faces threats from habitat destruction due to human activities such as agriculture and urbanization as well as hunting for food or sport; however conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from further decline.
