Australasian Darter Collection

The Australasian Darter is a species of Suliformes bird found in Australia, New Zealand, and nearby islands, and is a large bird with long wings and a long neck. Its body is mostly black or dark brown with white patches on its wings and tail and has an orange-yellow bill, yellow eyes, and yellow legs. The Australasian Darter feeds mainly on fish but will also eat frogs, crustaceans, insects, small mammals and birds. It dives into the water to catch its prey using its sharp bill to spear them before swallowing them whole, and are often seen perched on branches overhanging rivers or lakes where they can spot their prey below the surface of the water, and are social birds that form colonies during breeding season which usually occurs between September and April in Australia depending on location.
