Labrador Duck Collection

The Labrador Duck is a species of waterfowl that is now extinct. It was native to North America and was found along the Atlantic Coast from Newfoundland to New Jersey. Its plumage was blackish-brown with white patches on its wings and tail, and it had a yellow bill. The Labrador Duck was a diving duck, feeding mostly on mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. It nested in marshes or near ponds in small colonies of up to 20 pairs. Hunting pressure caused its population to decline rapidly during the 19th century, leading to its extinction by 1875. The last known specimen died in captivity at the London Zoo in 1876. Today, the Labrador Duck serves as an important reminder of how human activities can lead to species extinction if we are not careful with our actions towards wildlife conservation efforts.
