Brill is a species of fish that belongs to the family Scophthalmidae, and is found in the North Sea, Baltic Sea and Mediterranean Sea. A flatfish with a diamond-shaped body and can grow up to 70 cm in length. Its upper side is usually brown or olive green with dark spots, while its underside is white or yellowish. Brill feeds on crustaceans, molluscs and small fishes, which it catches with its strong jaws. It spawns from April to June and can live for up to 20 years in the wild. Brill has been fished commercially since ancient times, but overfishing has caused its population numbers to decline drastically in recent years. Conservation efforts are now being made to protect this species from extinction.
