Ocean Sunfish Collection

The Ocean Sunfish (Mola mola) is a large, unique species of fish that can be found in temperate and tropical waters around the world, and is the heaviest bony fish in the world, reaching up to 5,000 pounds, flattened body with a wide head and small eyes. Its dorsal fin is short and its tail fin is reduced to two small lobes. It feeds mainly on jellyfish and other planktonic organisms such as squid and crustaceans. Its main predators are sharks, seals, dolphins, porpoises, whales, sea lions and seabirds. The Ocean Sunfish has an interesting mating behavior where males will swim around females until they become exhausted before mating takes place. Conservation efforts for this species are important due to its vulnerable status due to overfishing in some areas as well as entanglement in fishing gear or plastic debris which can lead to mortality rates of up to 90%.
