They have an elongated body shape with a pointed snout and small scales. They range in color from silver to dark blue-green on their backs with white or pale yellow undersides. The average size of a salmon is between 20-50 inches long and they can weigh up to 50 pounds. Salmon feed on smaller fish, crustaceans, insects, plankton, and other aquatic organisms. They migrate upstream during spawning season to lay eggs in gravel beds where they will hatch into fry before heading back downstream to the ocean as juveniles and can an important food source for humans as well as other animals such as bears and eagles due to their high nutritional value which includes omega-3 fatty acids which promote heart health.
