The body of a shiner is elongated and slender with an olive-green or yellowish coloration on its back and sides. Its fins are usually black or dark brown in color. Shiner has two barbels near its mouth which it uses for feeding on small insects, crustaceans, worms, and other aquatic organisms and has an average lifespan of four years but can live up to eight years if given proper care. An important part of the food chain as it serves as prey for larger predators such as basses and walleye pikes.
