Sprat Collection

Sprat is a small, herring-like fish found in the North Atlantic and North Sea and has a slim body with a silvery-green back and silver sides. Its head is pointed, with two large eyes and two long barbels on its chin. The sprat's diet consists of plankton, crustaceans, mollusks, worms and other small fish and can reach up to 15 cm in length and weigh up to 40g, and are an important food source for larger predatory fish such as cod, haddock and mackerel as well as seabirds like guillemots and gannets and are commercially fished for human consumption in some parts of Europe where they are eaten fresh or smoked or canned for later use. Sprats provide an important source of protein to many people living near coastal areas around the world.
