Surgeonfish, also known as tangs, are a family of saltwater fish found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, and are usually brightly colored with long, deep bodies and forked tails. The most common species is the yellow tang which is popular in home aquariums. They have sharp spines on their caudal peduncle which they use to defend themselves from predators. They feed primarily on algae and other plant material but can also eat small invertebrates like worms and crustaceans and can generally peaceful fish that can be kept with other species of similar size and temperament but should not be kept with larger or more aggressive fish as they may become stressed or injured.
