Bean Aphid Collection

Bean aphids (Aphis fabae) are small, sap-sucking insects in the Hemiptera order, and are a major pest of beans, peas and other legumes, and are typically green or yellowish-green in color and have two short antennae on their heads. They feed by piercing plant tissue with their needle-like mouthparts and sucking out the sap. As they feed, they excrete a sticky honeydew substance which can lead to sooty mold growth on plants. Bean aphids reproduce rapidly and can quickly infest an entire crop if left unchecked. Natural predators such as ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, parasitoid wasps and birds help to keep populations in check but chemical control may be necessary for large infestations.
