Aepyceros petersi Collection

Aepyceros petersi, commonly known as the impala, is a species of bovid mammal found in eastern and southern Africa, and is a medium-sized antelope with an average shoulder height of about 3 feet and a body length of 4 to 5 feet. The coat is reddish brown in color with white patches on the face, neck and rump. Males have lyre-shaped horns that can reach up to 20 inches in length. Impalas are herbivores that feed mainly on grasses, leaves and fruits. They live in small herds led by a dominant male and females give birth to one or two offspring after a gestation period of 6 months. Impalas are fast runners capable of reaching speeds up to 50 mph when threatened by predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas and are excellent jumpers capable of leaping distances up to 33 feet. An important species for maintaining healthy African ecosystems due to its role as both prey and predator within their habitats.
