Bontebok Collection

The bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus pygargus) is a species of antelope in the Bovidae family, and is native to South Africa and is the national animal of that country, and are medium-sized animals, with males reaching up to 1.5 meters tall and weighing up to 90 kgs. They have a distinctive white patch on their faces, as well as white patches on their backs and legs, and are herbivores, eating mainly grasses, shrubs, and leaves. They live in herds of up to 20 individuals and are active during the day. The bontebok population has been decreasing due to hunting for its meat or horns, habitat loss due to agriculture or urbanization, competition with livestock for food resources, and predation by wild dogs or jackals. Conservation efforts have been put in place in order to protect this species from extinction; however more work needs to be done if we want future generations of bonteboks roaming free across South Africa's plains.
