European Bison Collection

The European Bison, also known as the wisent, is a species of bovid mammal native to Europe, and is the heaviest surviving wild land animal in Europe and is the continent's largest extant terrestrial mammal. The species was once widespread across Eurasia but became extinct in the wild in 1927 due to hunting and habitat loss. It was reintroduced into several countries beginning in 1954, typical bovid body shape with short legs and a long tail, as well as large shoulder humps and horns on its head. Its fur ranges from dark brown to yellowish-brown depending on season and age. It typically lives in small herds of up to 10 individuals that feed mainly on grasses, herbs, shrubs, lichens, mosses, fruits and nuts during summer months while relying more heavily on woody plants during winter months when food sources are scarce.
