Gemsbok (Oryx gazella) are large antelope mammals belonging to the Bovidae family, and are native to the arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa, including the Kalahari Desert. They have a light brown coat with white patches on their face and neck, black stripes along their legs, and long, curved horns and can reach up to 1.2 m in height at the shoulder and weigh up to 250 kg and can well adapted for desert life; they can go for days without water due to their efficient kidneys and digestive systems that extract moisture from plants they eat. They also have a wide range of vocalizations used for communication between members of their herd. Gemsbok live in small herds of up to 15 individuals led by an alpha male who defends his territory against intruders while females look after calves until they reach maturity at two years old.
